Klis

Klis is a settlement that was founded at the foot of a medieval fortress, and was named after the gorge on which the fortress was built. It is widely known for the Klis Fortress, which dominates the area and was used as a filming location for the popular TV series Game of Thrones. The fortress was an important strategic stronghold in the defence against the Ottoman Empire, and today it is a popular tourist attraction due to its preserved walls and spectacular views of Split.

Klis is famous for the Klis Uskoks, warriors who defended this area for centuries. The most famous is the Uskok Battle of Klis, in which Klis finally fell into the hands of the Ottomans, after decades of resisting Ottoman conquest. The fortress now houses an interactive centre that introduces visitors to the story of the Klis Fortress and its rich history.
