About Stobreč
Today, Stobreč is a place where history and modern life come together. Its architecture, natural surroundings, and a more relaxed pace of living make it an ideal choice for those seeking a fulfilling stay away from the city bustle, yet close to all the major cultural and tourist centers of Dalmatia.
Stobreč's location
Stobreč is situated on the edge of the fertile Split plain, on a small peninsula overlooking a shallow sandy bay where the Žrnovnica river flows into the sea. It is surrounded by the islands of Brač and Šolta on the seaward side, the city of Split to the west, and Mount Mosor to the north, forming a natural amphitheater. Stobreč is located just 7 kilometers from the center of Split and Diocletian’s Palace.
The history and heritage of Stobreč
Stobreč, located on the southern coast of the Adriatic Sea, has a history spanning more than 2,000 years. It was founded by Greek settlers from Issa (present-day Vis) in the 3rd century BC and was named Epétion. Thanks to its naturally sheltered position on a peninsula, it was well suited for defense and trade. Even today, the remains of strong fortification walls built from large stone blocks are visible on the northern side of the old town center.
